Review: Super 8 Is Super Great!
Super 8 is the product of writer/director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg; based on the kinds of Super 8 movies Abrams and Spielberg made as children. It is also strong influenced by the films Abrams grew up watching which were either directed, written, or produced by Spielberg. I’ve explained it like this to my friends who’ve not seen it: It’s like The Goonies, ET, and Close Encounters all wrapped up into one.
Joe and his father don’t really get along after the untimely death of Joe’s mother. A few months later Joe has been helping Read the rest of this entry »

Quest 100: ‘Titanic’
The last time I watched Titanic was about five years ago, but having seen it about 10 times in my life, I planned to half-heartedly watch the film while packing for an upcoming New Year’s Eve trip to Las Vegas. Let’s just say, that was a total mistake. I packed for about 15 minutes before I was sucked into the masterpiece and was forced to abandon the suitcase. Bottom line, Titanic is an amazing film and by far, deserves to be higher on the American Film Institute’s Top 100 list. Read the rest of this entry »
Quest 100: ‘Easy Rider’
Easy Rider was a courageous undertaking for Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda who wrote and starred in the film together. Hopper also directed and Fonda produced the film. With a 20-page script, no crew and barely any budget, Hopper and Fonda managed to create a new genre of film. The hippie, or non-conformist, had never been properly represented on screen until the drug laden road film blew up box offices in the late ’60s.

‘On Stranger Tides’ trailer out today
As the counter’s numbers descended to zero, eventually changing to “WATCH IT NOW” on the new Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides trailer, thousands held their breath as they got their first look at the much-anticipated fourth installment only minutes ago.
There are a few things worth noting about this premiere glance at the film.
Could the kids seen at 1:23 in the video, be John Chandagnac and Beth Hurwood from Tim Powers’ book On Stranger Tides? While I would LOVE it if it they are indeed Powers’ characters, they could easily be extras thrown into the trailer. Then again, those characters don’t appear on the movie’s IMDb page; on the other hand, for several months IMDb had the actress who plays Aunt May listed as “Carnage” when Spider-man 3 was in production. And we still don’t know who Dame Judi Dench will be portraying in this upcoming picture.
Anyone else think Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa is looking more and more like Anne Ramsey these days?

Quest 100: ‘A Night at the Opera’
I didn’t realize that A Night at the Opera was a Marx Brothers film until I popped in the DVD. What a pleasant surprise! Having seen a few of their other films, I already knew that I was a fan of their comedic style. So I went into the movie thinking that I was in for a treat, but it turned out it was a treat of the bittersweet variety.
Groucho plays a business manager of a wealthy woman who invests in an opera company. Chico is a random Italian immigrant that hangs out with Harpo, a mute. The three of them try to help out a Read the rest of this entry »
New ‘Thor’ trailer and poster fall to Earth
With Thor hitting theaters in early May, another origin story made ready for the Joss Whedon-directed Avengers movie, expected out in 2012, falls into place.
Chris Hemsworth fills the role of Stan Lee-created Norse-god-turned-superhero Thor, exiled to Earth by his father, Odin (played by Anthony Hopkins), where he must learn to live among ordinary folk.
The movie pretty much picks up where the fanboy squeal-inducing, post-credits Iron Man 2 scene leaves off, with S.H.I.E.L.D. agents finding Goldilocks (as Lee lovingly dubbed Thor back in the day) in New Mexico.
Truthfully, it’s going to be fascinating with Shakespeare-adapting director Kenneth Branagh at the helm. Hopkins has actually been quoted as saying, “This is a bit of a Shakespeare movie as well, on a big scope.”
Also released hours ago was a new trailer for the film, set to release in theaters May 6 in both 2D and 3D formats. Watch the trailer here after the jump.
Quest 100: ‘Platoon’
For some weird reason, I thought Platoon was gonna be a fun and crazy war movie with intense actors covered in war paint running around. I was wrong. Platoon is an intense recollection of Director Oliver Stone’s own service in the Vietnam War as a grunt. This film has an impressive ensemble cast, including many recognizeable faces: Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, Forrest Whitaker and Willem Dafoe, just to name a few. Even Johnny Depp shows up in the film with a small role as an interpreter. All characters in the film were based on real people Read the rest of this entry »
